Many many years ago now, as my style had evolved and the purpose behind my work had begun to solidify, I began giving my paintings genuine female names. Each artwork has her own unique essence and character, and so in turn, I also compose her story in words and bestow upon her a rightful name.
In the coming weeks I will introduce (or re-introduce) some of my ladies and the tales they tell for you to enjoy.
What's in a name?
In most cases I take the time to search for a name of significance and meaning to suit each persona of my work. Whether that is a name is suited to an era or character she reminds me of, or the literal definition of the name in relation to her personality or conception. It certainly isn't easy! A lot of times name meanings vary from site to site as well as in language and regions, so the task requires quite a lot of research.
The name also has to flow with her story, the essence of my artwork. It has to feel right in my gut. That's when I know I have the right one.
"Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul." Vincent Van Gogh.
Her story comes together, first and foremost from somewhere inside of me. Her written story is derived from the choreography of her colours and lines and the way in which they speak to and move me, while also incorporating the hidden messages she possesses, such as tattoos, totems and colour meanings. Ultimately each artwork becomes her own unique character with her own tale to tell. A tale which I absolutely know, without a pinch of a doubt, most of us can connect with in one way or another.
