Artist Statement

I am and have always been enraptured by a woman’s physical beauty and sexuality; it is where my artwork as an adult began over 25 years ago. However, overtime, the stereotypical notion in our society that a beautiful women could not possibly have any substance, began to inspire my work. And ultimately, through my own life struggles having experienced so much about what can be hidden inside oneself; the strength and determination which arose from within me which I had never even known existed, became my driving force.

And so, I create artwork empowering women. I bring her inner power bolstering to the surface, choreographed with passion, heightening her resolve, choreographed with passion, abstract line and colour to remind you of its existence. Celebrating her diversity, revelling in her beauty and sexuality, revealing her sensuality, her secrets and mystery, and most significantly, saluting her confidence, heart and spirited strength of character.

My artwork predominantly consists of saturated acrylics, exhibiting brilliant block colour and striking contrast, the sensual curves of the female body and the faultless lines of geometry and pattern; With hand and brush only, I achieve beautiful unyielding saturation while exhibiting a meticulous sense of order and impeccable print-like quality. Periodically I will include textiles and alternate mixed media in my artwork, the choreography of such resulting in the perfect combination of stimulating texture and divergence.

My name is Tanya Marie Reeves and I am a single mum of two teenagers and a self-taught professional artist, born, raised, living and creating in my hometown of Broken Hill, Australia. My mission is to create exquisite, distinctive works of art, to adorn your rooms with originality, style and beauty but also especially with character, strength and an empowering energy. I hope for my artwork to captivate those within and around your homes and workplaces, to spark connections, conversations and inspirations, while reminding us all there is more to every woman than meets the eye.

My Journey

Now that you have settled in, I wanted to get in touch to tell you a little more about me and my personal art journey so far. I know you’re busy, so I promise I am only going to give you the cliff notes.

I was born in the outback mining town of Broken Hill, Australia on October 23rd, 1974. I am the eldest of two girls and now a single mother of my own two teenage children, continuing to reside in our hometown.

I had always had an eye and talent for drawing as a child. I dabbled in the craft growing up and also as a young adult, though I never had any intentions of becoming an artist professionally, and I had given it up altogether before I turned 27.

It was actually a grueling divorce, some tough life lessons, a history of depression and anxiety that led me back to creating again in 2005. Painting gave me strength and focus, and filled my heart and soul with self-worth. It was also a time when the Internet was exploding, which opened up my small world and sparked and encouraged my fast-emerging artistic dreams. In 2006 I took the plunge and decided to follow art as a career path.

Early in 2011, a prestige gallery in New York (Agora Gallery) contacted and encouraged for me to submit a portfolio to their gallery, not only cementing my idea of being a professional artist but also leading to many more incredible opportunities over the past several years.

I have exhibited numerous times within Australia and overseas; New York in the US, Italy, France and London, while also racking up some great awards and publications along the way, and lucky enough to have opened my own gallery in my hometown in 2013.

Unfortunately, due to family, personal and financial matters, in 2019 I closed my gallery doors... Though now I and am working from home in my newly renovated studio which I absolutely adore!

Everyday I believe I am absolutely still growing and learning what I am capable of as an artist, frolicking with application techniques and experimenting with new concepts. My style has developed and evolved over many years. What started as purely aesthetic works inspired by the design and manipulation of strong contrasting colours and lines, has become something else. Something most important!

Most Important

Now that you know a little more about me on a personal level I’d like to get right to the nitty-gritty of my art. After all, that’s what you’re here for right?

When I first began painting full time, I didn't really know that I was painting for a cause, other than to make myself feel better. I was a single mother of a 3 year old and an 18 month old going through a horrific divorce among other nasty things. My children gave me hope and kept me moving forward, but painting kept me sane; gave me a focus outside of my mess.

What started as purely aesthetic works inspired by the design and manipulation of strong contrasting colours and lines, has become something else. Something most important. Little did I know my art, my saving grace, was building into a body of strength and character. An empowering force, not only for myself but for each and every woman.

Through my struggles I have learned so much about myself. The strength and determination which arose from within me, I had never even knew existed.

I have learnt over the years that most women often fall under the stereotypical notion that they cannot possibly be more than face value. Even through their own eyes. That being beautiful means having no smarts. That embracing her sexuality means she’s grande-horizontal. That showing vulnerability means she couldn’t possibly have an inner strength or that by being assertive and independent means she surely has no heart.

And it is here when I realised where my artwork was taking me.

And so I became more conscious of the truth in the artwork, in the characters, I was creating: That there is so much more hidden away in every woman than meets the eye, and whatever they be, whoever they are, they should be embraced.

And so I create beautiful, bold, empowering paintings of women.  Celebrating her diversity, reveling in her beauty and sexuality, revealing her sensuality, her secrets and mystery, and most significantly, saluting her confidence, strength and spirited strength of character. Bold, sexy and fierce.

Unique Technique

So I know you’ve wondered… It is the number one FAQ on my list: How do I get the lines in my work so straight? And nope, I don’t use any masking tapes or fluids. But first things first…

I am a self-proclaimed perfectionist.  I have learnt to treasure it, which resonates in my work, particularly in my strong lines, it is a huge factor in what makes my artwork and technique so unique. I love the striking, boldness of saturated acrylics, the splendour of intense brilliant block colour and striking contrast, and the sensual curves of the female form. I primarily mould and manipulate geometric shapes and patterns with contrasting colour, contours and lines, a dash of attitude and a splash of sass.

The first thing I do is find a pose, usually through fashion photography or dance as the poses are very specific and quite exaggerated. I will then sketch my complete design based on the silhouette of that pose and project it up onto the canvas and draw my outline ready for colour.

All of my lines are created by hand, no masking, using a small flat brush, a good eye and sometimes embellished with  a lot of profanity! The work requires layers, upon layers of paint until I achieve a beautiful unyielding saturation and impeccable print-like quality. So even though I mostly work in block colour, there is roughly 30+ hours of time in each painting.

Periodically I will include textiles and alternate mixed media in my artwork, the choreography of such resulting in the perfect combination of stimulating texture and divergence.

The final product will often change several times throughout the process and every now and again even taking on a life of its own ending up nothing even close to resembling the original design!
